Managing a Championship

How to create a championship and add your own events and other organizers' events to it. Description and management of the championship's promo page

Championships, cups, series, leagues, festivals, and other complex forms of competition are easier to think of and work with as collections of events. For example, a "Championship 2000" collection might include the events of one organizer's 2000 season, while a "City Day Marathon" collection might include all the annual marathons held in different years.

The Championships section of the dashboard lets you group events into collections and publish them on promo pages.

An event can be included in several championships at once — for example, a "Cycling Race" might be included in "Cycling of the Year," "National Championship," "City Events," and "Events of the Year" all at the same time.

An event can also be added to other organizers' championships. For example, a city municipality may not organize events itself, but it can combine events from different organizers into a "City Sports Events" championship.

You can use championships as promo campaigns, freely grouping your own events and other organizers' events based on the goals of your campaign.

Terms

Here we explain the terms you'll use when working with championships.

Championship

A championship is a collection of events selected by certain criteria. You can create static collections of events that stay unchanged over time (dynamic collections that update their event list as things change are planned for the future).

Championship ID

When a championship is added to an account, it's assigned a unique internal identifier. You can find it in the URL when viewing the championship's details. The championship ID is generated automatically when a new championship is added and cannot be edited.

Event ID

When an event is added to an account, it's assigned a unique internal identifier. You can find it in the URL when viewing the event's details. The event ID is generated automatically when a new event is added and cannot be edited.

Snippet

A block of information about a page that's shown in search results. A snippet consists of a title and a description of the page, and may also contain additional information about the site. The title and description can be edited in the SEO section.

Creating a championship

Click the plus button in the Championships section and come up with a name for your championship. The name can include your brand, season, or other distinguishing features that make the championship unique.

There is no limit to the number of championships you can create.

Setting up a championship

Before publishing a championship, you need to describe it, provide the organizer's contact details, and add at least one event.

To describe the championship, go to Settings:

  1. Settings — Edit the championship name (required). Specify the championship organizer (required). Use a recognizable organizer brand.
  2. Description — Briefly describe the championship (required).
  3. Photo — Add a championship cover photo (required). The optimal aspect ratio is 5:3. Photos with a different aspect ratio will be automatically cropped at the edge. The recommended minimum photo width is 1024 px. We only accept JPG files up to 20 MB.
  4. Contacts — Provide an email address (required), phone number, and contact person. The championship organizer on the platform and the real-world organizer don't have to be the same. For example, you could act as the championship organizer on the platform on behalf of a municipality. In that case, you need to provide contact details for people who can respond to platform users' inquiries — that could be you or a contact person from the real organizer. Provide a link to the championship organizer's website in the format https://your_domain. We only accept https links.
  5. SEO — Fill in the descriptions for the search engine snippet. You can leave them blank, in which case we'll generate a snippet automatically.

Adding an event to a championship

To add an event to a championship, you'll need the event token for the event you want to add.

To get the token, go to the Events section, select the event you want to add, and go to the Championships tab. Click the plus button and copy the one-time token. Go to Championships - (Championship) - Events. Click the plus button. Enter your event's token and click Add. The event will be added to the championship, but won't be shown on the championship page until you publish it. To publish it, go to Championships - (Championship) - Events - (Event) and click Publish. You can read more about publishing on the championship page below.

To add another organizer's event to your championship, ask them to provide you with the event token.

There is no limit to the number of events in a championship.

Removing an event from a championship

Any event can be removed from a championship at any time, either by the event's organizer or by the championship's organizer.

Championship pages

A landing page is automatically created for every championship, letting your audience instantly engage with your championship promo campaign.

Landing page attributes

The landing page contains:

  • Draft status — shown for unpublished (hidden) pages
  • Championship name
  • Number of starts — determined automatically based on the number of starts in each event in the championship
  • Number of participants — determined automatically based on the number of participants in each event in the championship
  • Cover photo — shown on the championship's cover
  • List of events — events are ordered by date, ascending
  • Championship organizer's contact details — shown if they've been filled in the championship settings

Publishing a championship page

A championship page can only be published once all of the championship's required attributes have been filled in. An unpublished page can only be viewed by the event organizer.

Championship page SEO

Snippet — a block of information about a page that's shown in search results. A snippet consists of a title and a description of the page, and may also contain additional information about the site. The title and description can be edited in the SEO section.

Right now, the snippet shows:

  • Title — a title that describes what the page is about. If this field is left blank, we'll show the championship name in the snippet. Search engines guarantee that the title is shown on the search results page.
  • Description — describe what the page is about in a couple of sentences. If this field is left blank, we'll show the championship name in the snippet. The description may not match the description in the snippet — search engines generate the description themselves from the description and the text.
  • Canonical link — a unique link to the championship page. Generated automatically.
  • Photo — we pass along the championship's cover photo. The photo may be shown in search results, as well as when the link is shared via messengers and social media.

Managing an event on the championship page

For an event to appear on the championship page, it needs to be published after being added. An event can be hidden from the championship page and republished at any time. To remove an event from a championship, click Delete. You can always add a removed event back to the championship.

As the championship organizer, you can publish, hide, or delete events at any time.

As the event organizer, you can only remove your event from another organizer's championship. If you only need to hide the event in the championship, contact the championship organizer.

Event page

If an event has been added to championships, you'll find links on the event page to view the championships it's part of.
